1870年(明治3年)12月5日に小野田乾（いぬい）の長男として埼玉県北葛飾郡杉戸町に生まれる。（長男: 小野田潔 / 満州写真作家協会会員・孫: 小野田實 / 現代美術作家）。
埼玉県師範学校（現 埼玉大学 教育学部）卒業。1900年から1903年旧制埼玉県立熊谷中学校、1902年から1903年は埼玉県師範学校で図画教員として絵画を指導。その後、上阪し、天王寺師範学校、大阪教育大学などで絵画・博物学の教職に就く。また大阪博物学会の設立にも参画し大阪博物学会幹事となる。博物学者として「鳥類剥製法」「普通動物図説」「動物分類略図」などを出版。村越三千男(師範学校の同級生の博物学者)、小野田勝造(従兄弟・奈良女子高等師範学校教授)と『内外動物原色大図鑑（1-13巻）』『図解動物小辞典』などの生物学の図鑑も刊行する。また『小野田龍吟』と号し、画家として「略画大観」「略画の手引き」「小学校毛筆画・実験教授法」「日本新画帖」「絵画の手ほどき（伊久馬）」などの多くの著書を上梓。博物学者・画家そしてまた教育者としても生涯にわたって多くの弟子を育てる。1938年(昭和13年)7月23日亡くなる。

ONODA Ikuma was born in Saitama, Japan in 1870 and Studied at 

Saitama Normal School (Saitama University). He worked as an art teacher at Kumagaya High School and Saitama University etc. Then he moved to Osaka and became a professor of natural history at Osaka Kyoiku University and an advisor of the Osaka natural Historical Association.

 He authored many illustrated encyclopedias (and co-authored some encyclopedias with Murakoshi Michio ( Naturalist / 1872-1948) and Onoda Katsuzo ( Nara Women's University professor / Ikuma’s cousin / 1896-1948 ). 
He also used the name  “Onoda Ryugin''  as an artist and published a lot of books and raised many disciples as the master of Art, natural history and education 

for his entire life. He passed away on July 23, 1938.

Since the 2023 exhibition held at 

Coastal Branch Natural History Museum and Institute (Chiba, Japan), He's been re-discovered and re-evaluated.
